What Is Bad Breath From Throat And How To Get Rid Of It

Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria in the mouth, but it can be from the throat, stomach or esophagus. Bacteria that live in the mouth causing bad breath can also travel down the esophagus. These bacteria produce an odor that can cause bad breath from throat.
Bacteria are naturally present in the mouth and on the tongue. These bacteria are important for digestion and are not harmful. However, these bacteria can produce more sulfur than normal or accelerate their rate of growth and quickly multiply out of control. Certain foods or illness can cause them to grow too quickly or produce too much sulfur. This sulfur and other digestive gases from the bacteria causes bad breath.

The excess bacteria are transferred to the tonsils and the throat area each time a person swallows. Mucous and bacteria moved down further along the digestive tract can cause bad breath from throat. When this happens, even the best attempts at keeping the mouth clean will not work for halitosis. Even the best oral hygiene practices can't reach the throat and esophagus to kill the odor causing bacteria. When other conditions are present, such as illness or post nasal drip, these bacteria will gain a food source.  This allows them to keep reproducing and grow out of control causing even more bad breath.

To get rid of bad breath, follow a strict oral hygiene plan.  Brush at least twice a day, or after every meal if possible. Switch to a toothpaste that is oxygenated, but does not contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). SLS can dry the mouth, which makes halitosis worse.

The teeth should be flossed every day to remove bacteria and food trapped between the teeth. Scraping the tongue with a special tool can also help remove bacteria colonies. An oxygenated mouthwash can also help kill bacteria and reduce bad breath. Drinking a lot of water during the day can also help. The water will help flush away food particles and bacteria colonies. Staying hydrated also prevents dry mouth, which can lead to bad breath itself.

If these steps do not reduce bad breath, you should consult a doctor or physician. Certain conditions, such as ulcers, can cause bad breath. Only a physician can rule out a medical reason for halitosis.
